چکیده

This study aims at a groundwater vulnerability assessment of the Metaponto coastal plain, located in Basilicata region (southern Italy). In last century, intensive agriculture, zootechnical and industrial activities have significantly changed plain. These changes led to negative impacts on hydrogeological system intensifying risk aquifer pollution. The paper presents intrinsic carried out by GIS-based application SINTACS method. It considers several parameters such as water table depth, effective infiltration, unsaturated conditions, soil media, hydraulic conductivity topography. Furthermore, anthropogenic influence area was considered applying SINTACS-LU method, which parameter land use (LU) added. indexes were provided summing product ratings weights assigned each parameter. analysis map allowed for determining three classes ranging from low high vulnerability. both cases, southeastern part closest sea, shows highest class, indicating that it is most vulnerable contamination due factors. wide central moderate class scattered small parts northern portion represents areas less contaminable space time case potential map, some classified highly method show minor class. are localized natural wooded sectors populated, where human impact minimal.

Groundwater Vulnerability Assessment of the Pingtung Plain in Southern Taiwan

In the Pingtung Plain of southern Taiwan, elevated levels of NO₃--N in groundwater have been reported. Therefore, efforts for assessing groundwater vulnerability are required as part of the critical steps to prevent and control groundwater pollution. This study makes a groundwater vulnerability assessment for the Pingtung Plain using an improved overlay and index-based DRASTIC model. The improv...

Qualitative Assessment of the Coastal Plain of Talesh using the Modified DRASTIC Vulnerability Method

Given the fact that the DRASTIC index is ineffective in addressing the saltwater uprising issue in coastal plains, in the present study, three factors including land use, distance to shoreline, and differences between groundwater and sea level were added to the DRASTIC index. The proposed modification to DRASTIC was validated using the measured electrical conductivity (EC) data gathered from gr...

Intrinsic Vulnerability Assessment of a Confined Carbonatic Aquifer: the Brindisi Plain Case (Southern Italy)

Apulia, in the absence of surface water, is one of the Italian regions which satisfy their water requirements by drawing large quantities (over 40%) of its water from underground resources. The large amounts drawn from these resources in the last few years due to increasing human activity on the territory has determined a general and inevitable reduction of the quality of the underground water ...

Nitrate Contamination of Groundwater under Irrigated Coastal Plain Soils

To develop best management practices (BMP) for agricultural land to protect groundwater, data is needed on the leaching of N from irrigated coastal plain soils treated with poultry manure. This study was conducted to determine the vertical and seasonal patterns of NO3 leaching under such soils. Four commercially farmed corn (Zea mays L.) fields were studied, two receiving only fertilizer N (240...

Groundwater and microbial processes of Alabama coastal plain aquifers

[1] We integrate groundwater geochemistry, microbiology, and numerical modeling techniques to study the origin of elevated salinity and chemical evolution of groundwaters in the coastal plain aquifers of Alabama. Our field data indicate that chemical composition of groundwater evolves by various geochemical and microbial processes as it moves deeper into the subsurface. Sequential peaks of Ca, ...
